A Stony Resolve八大力尊社

The Hachidai Rikison, or "Eight Stout Pillars," are stone foundations that once served as key architectural supports at Rengekoin Temple.

Although the temple no longer exists, the foundations survive to this day, and are revered at Hachidai Rikison Shrine as auspicious gods of inner strength.

The Curious Case

We eight brothers are the stone bases of the pillars that have long supported the roof here at Rengekoin Temple.

Listen to all those footsteps! Today is yet another busy day promising many visitors... But wait, some men have arrived to take down our pillars!

What is the meaning of this?

我ら八兄弟は、蓮華光院の柱を支える力石である。 今日も寺院を訪れる人々の足音が聞こえるな…と 思っていたら、支えている柱が抜かれていく。 はて、これはなにごとか…?

Story 1

Though our temple may be gone, we stone foundations have since been dug up and are now worshipped as the "Eight Stout Pillars." How strange that people should be praying to us!

Story 2

It is far from easy to get by in this world. So let us, who long supported the roof of our temple, bestow on others the strength to harden their resolve, that they too might be able to bear the burdens life brings...

Story 3

Bah, look at them all head to the shrine, couples binding their fate together, others seeking to sever that bond... Don't they know that fate is fickle, and misfortune may strike at any moment? They'd be wise to pray to us.
