The Haunted Manor河原院の化け物屋敷
There once stood in old Kyoto a haunted manor house called Kawara-no-in Villa.
Legend has it that, late one night, a man and his wife arrived in the city. Unable to secure lodging, they approached the seemingly unoccupied manor in the hope of putting up there for the night. However, while they were outside, the front door suddenly flew open, a hand dragged the woman inside, and the door slammed shut.
The man tried to get inside to rescue his wife, but the door would not budge. Eventually, he gathered all his might and kicked it open, terrified of what he might find. But nothing could have prepared him for what awaited him inside.
There, in the dim light of the abandoned manor, the man saw his beloved wife lying prone on the floor, dead and drained of every drop of her blood.
So the long journey from the east is finally at an end. We have arrived at the capital.
Though my wife tries to hide it, I can tell that all that travel has worn her out. Well, our inn cannot be far from here.
...Ah, that must be it! It will be a relief indeed to rest our weary bones.
やっと京の都についた。 東国からここまで、長旅であったわ。 妻も表情にこそ出さないがずいぶんと疲れている様子。 お？ 見えてきたな。あそこが今晩の宿だ。 今夜はゆっくりと体を休めることにしよう。
What's this? You have no rooms, you say? But I sent word of our arrival well in advance!
...A mix-up? I'll say! Where do you expect us to find an inn at such short notice?
Gah, I could strangle those nincompoops! They have turned us out on the street at an hour when surely no inn is taking guests! But this is no time to despair. My wife needs me!
...Now, what's that over there? It looks like an old manor house of some kind. And it appears to be unoccupied. Hmm... It is far from ideal, but all we need is a place to lay our heads...
What manner of devilry is this!? It all happened in a flash. I could have sworn I saw an arm emerge from the manor and before I knew it, my wife had been dragged inside. I must find her, but this blasted door won't budge! Well, I'll just have to kick the accursed thing down. Here goes... Hyaah!
