A Gift of Compassion賜った着物

The Collection of Tales from Uji contains a story about a poor woman whose frequent trips to Kiyomizu-dera Temple gained her the sympathy of the goddess Kannon, who felt moved to gift her a cloth of silk from her high altar.

Though the woman refused the silk three times, Kannon at last prevailed upon her to take it home and have it made into a kimono.

This striking kimono brought the woman much good fortune, winning the heart of the fine man who became her husband. Thereafter, the two of them lived a happy, fulfilling life.

The Curious Case

I was ordered by the governor to make a survey of this village, and it pains me to report that the situation here is far worse than I had feared. The people are dirt poor, there are no two ways about it.

Why, that girl I passed a moment ago should be enjoying youth's brief blossom but seemed weighed down by troubles too many to name. The unfortunate creature is doubtless on her way to the temple. Well, I can only hope the Goddess of Mercy brings her some small measure of solace.

Story 1

O Kannon, goddess of mercy! Forgive me for intruding once more upon your hallowed ground. But it is only in praying to your blessed image that I can begin to forget my miserable existence.

Although it is true that once, in your infinite mercy, you favored me with this cloth of fine silk, I fear that I am not worthy of it!

And so I offer it back to you, O compassionate one, for while I am truly grateful, I cannot imagine what good it might do me.

Story 2

Know this—my mercy may be infinite, but my patience has limits. This is the third time that you have come here to return that cloth to me.

I gave it to you as a gift, and in continuing to refuse it, you are displaying a distinct lack of graciousness. If you are really at a loss as to how to use it, may I suggest a kimono? Make good use of a gift, and I promise you it will bring further blessings...

Story 3

It took somewhat longer than planned, but I have now completed my survey and the conclusion is clear. What this place needs is money, and plenty of it. It's just a shame that tightfisted governor will never consent to loosening the purse strings!

...Hm? Why, it's that girl I saw visiting the temple the other day! But there's something different about her. Could it be that curious kimono she is wearing?

But it's more than that, surely. It's strange...but her face looks so calm you could almost mistake her for the Goddess of Mercy herself...

That's it! I'll have her come up to the capital and make a plea for funds for this village. I defy the governor not to soften his heart in her presence. I shall propose this plan to her right away...!
