Everlasting Love清玄桜姫物
The story of the monk Seigen and Princess Sakura is a popular subject of Kabuki drama, and may be briefly summarized as follows:
One day, a monk belonging to Kiyomizu-dera Temple fell madly in love with the noble Princess Sakura. However, spurned by the princess and chastised by his monastic fellows, the pitiful monk was driven into obscurity, where he ultimately met a grisly death.
It is said that, unable to relinquish his desires even after death, the monk thereafter began to haunt the princess as a wandering ghost.
"Well, if it isn't Princess Sakura! Fancy a stroll around the temple grounds? I am a most capable guide, I assure you. And afterwards, the two of us can hit the town for a little drink. Come on, it'll be fun, I promise."
"How many times must I tell you, you stubborn man? I said no! Really, to think that a monk of Kiyomizu-dera Temple should have such vulgar thoughts! Have you no shame? But here, let us see you try to follow me now!"
And with that, the princess opened her umbrella and leapt from the temple stage, and so slipped away from the lecherous monk.
After the noble princess rebuffed me, my behavior was brought to the attention of the authorities, and I was forcibly driven from the temple.
Now I live sad and alone in this tumbledown cottage where not a moment goes by without me thinking of my heart's one true desire.
O princess, fair princess! My darling Princess Sakura!
You...! You're that lecherous monk who deigned to behave so discourteously towards her highness at Kiyomizu-dera Temple!
We came to this cottage seeking shelter from the rain, but it would appear that we have entered a tiger's den. Careful now, Princess! This is a most dangerous man!
...Stand back! I said "Stand back!", you insolent fool! Take another step and I shall be forced to cut you down!
My princess... Reunited at last, only for it to end in tragedy! Look at me! Run through by that lumbering oaf! See how my lifeblood drains from me...
But despair not, for though I must abandon my flesh, my soul is set free! Free to pursue you, my princess, never to part, to the very ends of the earth if need be...!
