The Raid on Mount Oe: The Headstrong Oni酒呑童子討伐伝・酒呑童子の執念
Having succeeded in lulling Shuten Doji into a stupor, Yorimitsu seized his chance and cut off the Oni chief's head.
But even in its disembodied state, the head rose up to attack Yorimitsu.
And though it momentarily appeared as if the Oni might devour the noble warrior with his fearsome fangs, it could not penetrate the divine helm that had been bestowed on Yorimitsu by the gods.
Seeing that the Oni's head was reeling after its foiled attack, Yorimitsu pressed his advantage to finally best Shuten Doji.
Raising his sword aloft, Yorimitsu lopped off the head of the sleeping Shuten Doji in a single stroke.
"Aargh! So this was your plan all along, you monstrous monks! Or should I say, 'warriors,' sent from the capital! I will not forgive you for this foul act of trickery!"
With these words, the disembodied head of Shuten Doji rose up into the air, and gnashing its razor-sharp fangs, flew straight at Yorimitsu.
"Lord Yorimitsu!"
The Four Heavenly Kings had time only to call out their leader's name in horror. The Oni had moved so swiftly that there was no time for them to intercede.
"Truly, this demon does not know when to die! But fear not, friends! For I was wise to don this divine helm and thereby gain the protection of the gods!"
And so, armed with sword and helm, Yorimitsu repelled Shuten Doji's attack in a dazzling display of martial skill.
Attacked by a disembodied head! This is unexpected to say the least. But with this helm's protection, I shall face you down. Prepare to die, fiend!
No, it can't be...! How can it be that my fangs cannot pierce that wretched helmet! Urgh! Th-this is the end... The shame... To be defeated by...by a mere mortal!
Can you believe it? They really did it! Lord Yorimitsu and the Four Heavenly Kings have defeated Shuten Doji and rid Mount Oe of that plague of evil Oni!
