A Wife's Prayer

On the grounds of Kiyomizu-dera Temple is a small hall that houses Yashajin, a god once feared for its violent temper, but now worshiped as a guardian deity responsible for purging bad karma and bestowing blessings on those who call on its divine protection.

It is said that when Yashajin is unable to purge a person of bad karma, they will lay a terrible curse upon the source of that karma.

After clearing

Despite her earnest prayers to Yashajin, the devoted wife's deadbeat husband dies. But as Yashajin is a deity known for cursing the sources of bad karma, Musashi is left wondering if the god did not in fact answer her prayers...

WomanOh yes, I know the lady you're talking about.
Her husband's illness is giving her a terrible time.
WomanShe comes to the temple every day and prays
for his recovery. Such a kindhearted woman.

A Wife's Prayer, scene 3 5 lines

ManYes, I know her, she's our neighbor. Her husband
bullies her something awful, the poor thing.
WomanYou wouldn't find me praying every day for a brute
like that, but she's clearly made of better stuff than I.
WomanHe really is just horrid to her. Why, if it were me,
I'd have stabbed him to death by now!
Man(息遣い)

MusashiWhat?
Lady Murasaki (Butterfly)Two things. One is what our devoted wife is praying to.
Lady Murasaki (Butterfly)The other is the rapidly increasing cloud of
Malice that her intense emotions are augmenting.
MusashiWe got rid of the Malice here!
ShizukaThis area must still be unstable, being so recently
purified. In fact, I sense a Rift opening nearby!

A Wife's Prayer, scene 5 8 lines

MusashiHey, are you all right?…

WomanHow word spreads...
WomanBut please, don't concern yourself on my
behalf. I assure you, I'm quite fine.
MusashiAnd she's gone. She said she was fine but I don't like this.
Lady Murasaki (Butterfly)Then there's nothing for it but to see this story to
its end. Shall we return to her and her husband's home?

A Wife's Prayer, scene 6 2 lines

MusashiMurasaki...what did you mean back there?
What is it that his wife has been praying to?

Yashajin is said to curse the karma's source instead.
Lady MurasakiI wonder if his devoted wife knew?
We'll leave that mystery tantalizingly unsolved.
Lady MurasakiAs for the woman herself...
Lady MurasakiI hear she's been getting along well with the vengeful
fellow we met previously at the stone lantern.
Lady MurasakiWhether that's good karma or bad...
I suppose only Yashajin would know.
